Kacena divoká (The Wild Duck), folk song for chorus, by Leos Janáček (1854-1928); English translation by Paula Kennedy

A wild duck flew down from the sky,
A young lad shot her in her left side,
With true aim just above the foot.

She cried as she swam on the water;
Bitterly she wept and called to God:

IMG_4403

Ah God, dear God, I’ll never fly again!
Woe is me, poor little duck …
I can no longer watch over my brood.

My little children do not harm;
They swim in the Danube, and drink murky water,
And eat hard sand…

IMG_4413

My little ducklings fly behind me!
We will fly away to the great Danube.
