Whether that’s safety or deterrence is a matter of interpretation though. But in my opinion, whatever safety that comes from deterrence is highly uncertain. Who knows when the other would get crazy and deliver you certain death? So whatever illusion of safety is based on the assumption that everyone has a lethal weapon and therefore one needs to be careful if one chooses to use his own. But it’s only a delusion because practically even if one has a gun, one can’t have in on him all the time. Also women and children don’t want them. So if a criminal wants to use his gun, no one can really prevent him other than the police. It’s just an advantage legally endowed on a criminal and that’s not fair if nothing else.
