While that the sun with his beams hot
Scorchèd the fruits in vale and mountain,
Philon the shepherd, late forgot,
Sitting beside a crystal fountain,
In shadow of a green oak tree
Upon his pipe this song play’d he:

Your mind is light, soon lost for new love.
So long as I was in your sight
I was your heart, your soul, and treasure;

此诗是一首怨男诗。这跟中国文化截然相反。中国只有怨女。
另一点和中国文化不同的是，此诗结尾，怨男转怨为喜：你这个多变的女人，幸亏你变得快，没功夫让我娶了你。我要你做甚？
而中国的怨女永远只是在怨，对负心汉毫无办法。
